Nothing is worse and even more dangerous than running out of water while enjoying my favorite outdoor activities. It doesn’t take me long to become dehydrated. The mountain streams and lakes near me can’t provide safe drinking water without proper filters.
While I’m hiking or backpacking, I like to keep my pack as light as possible. I want a filtration system that doesn’t add a lot of extra weight. The RapidPure Scout® Hydration System is a great solution keeping my packs light. It fits onto the tubing of my hydration bladder. This means I can fill up my water bladder directly from any dirty lake or stream and can suck clean water through the filter cartridge.
The filter cartridge is small and lightweight. I’ve tried it with the with crisp mountain stream water as well as water from dirty lakes. I haven’t had any problems drinking dirty water while filtering it with RapidPure Scout. I love when I find a high mountain stream with cold water on a hot day. With the RapidPure, I can have a cold drink with little effort.
The only trouble I’ve had with the filter is that I cut my tubing too low and didn’t leave myself enough room at the end. It is best to measure where you would like the filter to sit and cut the tubing accordingly. It would definitely be more comfortable higher on the shoulder then where I put it so I changed it to one of my other bladders. I don’t love using the filter on the straps of my trail running pack as I don’t like the hard plastic bouncing against me. However, for hiking and backpacking, this isn’t an issue. It took me some time finding the perfect spot on my pack straps where it won’t rub.
