I’m not going to lie, I hated the idea of fruit snacks for my children when they were younger. Most brands were full of added sugar and corn syrup and I felt like I was feeding them candy with the word “fruit” in the label. In fact, I use to make fruit leather from the nectarines off our tree. My children grew up liking the taste of real dried fruit.
The idea of mixing fruit and vegetable in a dried snack appeals to me and my family. We are constantly on the go and want healthy food choices to take with us on our adventures. Veggie-Go’s Snacks are perfect for fitting in our running and hiking packs. Both my adult daughter and I loved almost all of the flavor combinations. I know flavors like Sweet Potato Apple + Spices might sound like a turn off to some, but it is a great combination and ended up being one of my favorite flavors. Another unusual sounding flavor, Strawberry Chia Seeds + Beets, is a win for me too. Though I can taste the beets, the strawberry is the dominant flavor and I like beets anyway. The only flavor I didn’t care for was the Tropical Fruit + Kale. The Berry Apple + Spinach is the only other flavor I wasn’t so sure about the first time I tried it but I ended up liking it too.
I like that the snacks come in both strips and nibs. The strips are good for eating all at once, while the nibs are great when I don’t want to eat them all and want to fold up the package to finish later. The Orange Cocoa Nibs + Carrots were my favorite for hiking. They have more calories than the strips and made for a better fuel each hour on the trail.
Each strip is made with a half cup of fruits and vegetables and has one serving of real fruit/vegetables. I think they are plenty sweet even though they have no added sugar or corn syrup. And for my daughter who needs gluten free snacks, these are perfect. They are also USDA Organic for those who really want to make sure their food is natural.
There wasn’t anyone in my family who didn’t like the Veggie-Go’s Fruit and Veggie Snacks. My daughter’s boyfriend tried them and wanted to buy them for his daughters. I was glad to see they were available at Whole Foods and Sprouts since we shop there.
Overall, I didn’t find anything I didn’t like about the Veggie-Go’s other than one of the eight flavors. For those who are looking for a low calorie snack, the strips contain 50 calories or less. The nibs contain a little more so for adventurers like me looking to fuel, will want to bring extra.
