Between trail runs and travel to explore new places, I’m frequently on the go. I’ve learned the importance of packing light. I don’t have room in my trail pack for bulky water bottles nor do I want to add extra bulk while traveling.
My trail running pack came with two HydraPak® flexible water flasks and I love them when I need to carry extra water or an electrolyte drink. I have been a fan of HydraPak® ever since buying my pack. In fact, I made time to visit their booth at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market so I could see their full product line.
I was really excited to try the HydraPak® Stash, especially since I had some trips planned. What I like most about the Stash is that it collapses to fit nicely in my trail pack. I like to keep it in my pack with a dry electrolyte drink mix in case I end up doing a long hike or trail run and need electrolyte replacement. It saves a lot of weight not having to bring pre-mixed electrolytes and if I really need it, I can use the water in my reservoir to fill the bottle.
I used the Stash recently while traveling in Hawaii. I love that I could take the bottle through security empty and fill it up at the drinking fountain before getting on the plane. When I finish with my water, the bottle collapses down and allows me to stash it in the bottom of my back pack without extra bulk. The hard plastic also protects the flexible polyurethane from sharp objects in my pack. In fact, I like the HydraPak Stash better for traveling than for trail running and will probably keep it permanently in my travel bag. I also love the handle on the Stash. I use a carabiner to attach it to an inside clip in my travel back pack which makes it easy to find and I don’t have to worry about losing it.
One thing I’ve noticed with HydraPak® bottles and flasks is that the they sometimes have a funny taste when first using them. I’ve found that adding some lemon juice and water and letting them sit overnight usually removes the taste. I would never recommend using the bottle without trying this first. Also, I always take off the lid and expand the bottle after using it to let it dry inside, especially if I fill it with anything other than water. I haven’t had anything mold in it but my husband did have one of his HyrdaPak flasks almost ruined by not cleaning it and letting it dry after using it for a nutritional drink.
I haven’t had the bottle long enough to comment on durability.
