I’ve traveled to San Franciso many times and I never get tired of taking a stroll around the Golden Gate Bridge. I watch tourists get off the buses at the southeast or northeast side of the bridge, take a few photos and call it good. I always feel bad for them that they don’t take the time to see all that the area has to offer.
I like to start along the path below the bridge. I can always get the best pictures of the bridge from below and I love the walk along the beach. When I get near the bridge, instead of heading up the hill, I head down. That way I can see Fort Point.
Many tourists miss the Fort Point National Historic Site at the base of the bridge. The fort dates back to the Civil War and boasts some pretty cool cannons. It’s also a great place to learn about the history of San Francisco and why it was so important to defend the area. The site is well preserved and is open on the weekends. Since it is run by the National Park Service, I can always find somebody to answer my questions. They also provide guided tours.
After visiting Fort Point, it is a bit of a climb to get to the upper part of the bridge from here but worth it if you want to get some exercise. I like to make the climb and then walk across the bridge on the pedestrian walkway. I have also rented bicycles and rode into Sausalito to have lunch.
No matter how many times I visit San Francisco, I never get tired of visiting the Golden Gate Bridge.
